German President Joachim
Gauck supports Turkish athe-
ists in Germany — a sign that he
"probably thinks that he is still
a pastor," Prime Minister Recep
Tayyip Erdogan has said after
the visiting head of state ques-
tioned Turkey's democracy,
"We told him: We cannot tol-
erate interference in our coun-
trys domestic affairs," Erdogan
said yesterday in a parliamenta-
ry group meeting.
"One should do whatever be-
ing a statesman requires. I sup-
pose he still deems himself a pas-
tor because he was a pastor at the
time and he is looking with that
view. These are awful things,"
he said in an apparent reference
to the fact that Gauck was a for-
mer East German Lutheran pas-
tor who campaigned for the 1989
fall of the Berlin Wall.

have such an idea either," he
said yesterday, one day after the
guerilla leader's sister, Fatma
Ocalan, called for Öcalan to be
given house arrest.

One of the Muslim Brotherhood
members who was sentenced to
death in a mass ruling on April
28 has said the decision was an
honor for him, suggesting that
justice is "dead" in the country.
"The decision is not only
made up of executions. The im-
portant thing is where is Egypt
headed? We see that the prin-
ciple of justice has ended. The
country is ridiculed in the
world," said Shaban Omar, the
provincial Muslim Brotherhood
(Ikhwan) leader of Minya. "But
death from execution is a great
honor for us ... I will be a mar-
tyr if they kill me ... By the resis-
tance of free people, God willing,
the coup will end."
The United Nations, the Unit-
ed States, the European Union

demned the death sentences
