As an Asian American, I feel AAS courses have caused a sense of empowerment
within my own identity. I feel more confident about who am because I now know my
past. I believe being an Asian American Studies student has also allowed me to take
courses I normally would not take, such as courses in the Anthropology, Sociology,
Women Gender Studies, and Radio-Television-Film departments. believe taking
these courses has given me an edge when applying to graduate schools and looking
tor jobs because I have such a varied background in studies. The Center is also
beneficial because the programming it implements throughout the semester.

Choosing to become an Asian American Studies major has been one of the smartest
decisions have made as a college student. It has allowed me to discover myself by
learning about the past, present, and future questions faced by Asian Americans In
the US. I have been taught to think beyond the preconceived notions of race,
ethnicity, and gender in America and to define my own understanding about these
relevant issues. Furthermore, the family-like attitude at the Center for Asian American
Studies has allowed me to develop a close relationship, even friendships, with many
of my AAS professors. I advise all those who are searching for a unique academic
and self-empowering experience to take an AAS course during their time at the
IJniversity of Texas.

Ive always wanted to find my place in the pages ot American history. The Center for
Asian American Studies helped me achieve that goal through their ethnic studies
program. The historical and sociological context offered through the Asian American
Studies courses have and will continue to prove invaluable to me throughout my
career. As a journalism and Asian American Studies major, Ive always said that
•journalism gave me the tools for communication, but Asian American studies has
brought me my focus.

The AAS Faculty are so knowledgeable not just about "S topics but others as well.
So many of the professors and lecturers are able to bring in other disciplines so that
students are able to connect issues in other areas. The courses are just as diverse as
the faculty: every semester there are new and different courses that appeal to
everyone in the AAS umbrella. Many of the courses concentrate on one ethnicity and
the culture and history, which allows tor students to learn about other experiences.
The classes are smaller, intimate and meaningful. The faculty welcome their students
to speak up and express in class discussions that allow everyone to feel comfortable
no matter the topic. Everyone knows and the class becomes more of a
family rather than just a lecture course.
