iine Worid jewisin Congress
The story of the terrible Jew-igh tragedy in this war has been
retold at the emergency. conference Of the World Jewish Congress
which has just been concluded in Atlantic City. Kubotwitsky,
head of the Rescue Department, estimated that apart from Jewish
losses in combat service, Jews have been med in Ger-
many and germau-occupied tesritories since the outbreak of the
figures the anticipated even by most
pesimistic. Nor did any other speakers offer any balm. Dr.
Nahum Goldmann, in fact, realistically put the moral responsibility
for the Jewish tradgey—"with our own generation.' '
Future ages will not be able to say that we Jews were very
wise—if they are to judge by the amount of rescue we were able
to accomplish. Nor will they give a better testimonial to our dem.
ooratic governments. Dr. (hldmann told of the sad experiences
with the democracies :
' •The democracies cannot say that they were not warned, be.
cause since 1933, they were warned again and agaim- The reply
ec car were routine me2gureg, red tape and tbe rejection
Of measures proposed by us and other Jewish organizations. And
what-was done too late or too little. When we asked •them to inter-
vene with Gemaay the reply was that anti-Jewish policies are
the internal affairs of couutry whose sovereignty forbids other
countries to intervene. When we asked the opening of doors to
other countries, especially Palestine, the reply was that immigra-
ti0n policies are the internal affairs of a sovereign state. And
England's appeasement policy toward the Arabs led to the Eng-
1ish to shut the doors of Palestine at a time when their opening
was more essential than ever before.' '
Yes, the Germans murdered close to million jåWS, but the
democracies cannot point with any particular pride to their con-
duct either. Had they acted generousiy unci in time, many might
have been saved.
