YOU CAN STRATEGIZE
(TIPS FOR MANAGERS IN THE DIGITAL AGE)
AS RAPIDLY EVOLVING DIGITAL TECHNOLOGIES WORK TO EMPOWER COMMUNITIES WHILE
DISRUPTING INDUSTRIES AND SERVICES, IT'S HARD FOR MANAGERS TO ADMIT THAT THEY
HAVE FALLEN BEHIND IN THEIR DIGITAL STRATEGIES. AS LEADING PROVIDERS IN LEADERSHIP
EDUCATION FOR THE NEW DIGITAL DISRUPTION, HYPER ISLAND HAS DEVELOPED THESE TIPS
FOR COMPANY MANAGERS IN ADVANCE OF THEIR NEW NYC LEADERSHIP PROGRAM TO SET
THEM ON THE PATH TO THE DIGITAL DOMINATION AND HIGHER REVENUES.
l. DITCH THE EGOS
The first part of coming up with a solution is to admit there is a problem.
And that problem might be you. Digital is a rapidly evolving landscape and,
as a result, many leaders and managers get left behind. Admit your
ignorance early so you can create a strategy that addresses issues with
which you migh be unfamiliar.
2. CREATE A STRONG STRATEGY TEAM
Now that you know where your weaknesses are, you also know where your
opportunities are. Create a diverse team that can speak to this.
Collaboration is the key to truly transformative strategies and success
comes from the strength of the group dynamic. As a collaborative mindset
becomes integrated into the fabric of a company, the company will grow
stronger too.
3. LEARN ABOUT YOUR ECOSYSTEM
Knowing about the many digital tools (like Facebook, Twitter, Instagram,
and Vine) is not enough because they can quickly become obsolete. You
need to know your clients, their needs, ways of working, behaviors and
ideas that drive them, and make anything you learn the core of your a
strategy. If you are aware of your clients ways, you are more likely to be
involved in the places and channels that are relevant to your clients.
4. IDENTIFY TOOLS
If there's one thing digital does not lack, it's tools for innovation. However,
the number and variety of those tools can be a little overwhelming, so the
goal should always be to focus on the tools that, through own and others'
research, demonstrate effectiveness. Don't forget that a person with specific
skills or knowledge can also be a resource that provides a solution in the
digital space.
5. IDENTIFY THE ISSUES PAST, PRESENT AND THE FUTURE
When identifying the issues in strategy, make sure to adopt a forward
thinking philosophy. Know that when the digital ecosystem changes
(and it will), a strategy will still hold up. Many a strategy has failed
because leaders failed to think not just months, but years down the
technological road.
6. BE OPEN TO INNOVATING FOR CHANGE
Once you begin to form a strategy, make sure to recognize that the world is
constantly changing and to commit to a similarly constant state of learning.
This is a important step, regardless of age or level of experience. A company
open to learning will allow for adaptation and anticipation of trends, while
encouraging innovative ideas and perspectives.
7. MEASURE AND DISSECT DATA FOR BETTER ROI
As a manager, decide the role of data at your company. Data can provide
multiple functions; from helping you to understand clients and consumers
better, to allowing you to work more efficiently and adapt to change more
quickly. Once you clearly define these parameters and benchmarks for
success, then pinpoint relevant metrics to measure. Next, dissect collected
data to help future strategies and create better ROI. If used effectively, data
is a great learning tool for deciding how best to tailor future strategies.
