Your say invited on
new energy source
THOUGH construction of a
landmark waste-to-energy
plant in Kwinana will not start
this year as previously expect-
ed, the community will be able
to have its say on the project
over the next six months.
Phoenix Energy is finalis-
ing plans for a $300 million to
$400 million 80mW plant in the
Kwinana Industrial Areaw
The plant, to burn solid mu-
nicipal and commercial waste
to create thermal energy for
electricity generation, would
be the first of its kind in Aus-
tralia.
About 900 similar plants op-
erate worldwide.
The company has not yet
entered any application to the
government for the project or
named the site.
Phoenix managing director
Peter Dyson said the company
was finalising the proposed
site and energy off-take
arrangements.
"These should be in place
by the end of February," he
said. "Following that we
would expect that the formal
applications will be prepared
over the next six months in
parallel with more detailed en-
gineering and design."
"Community consultations
will also begin during that pe-
riod.
"At this stage, we are still
on target for a 2014-2015 com-
missioning milestone. "
Mr Dyson said previously
about 1000 jobs would be creat-
ed during construction and
the plant would need 60 oper-
ating staff
Another group, New Ener-
gy Corporation, is investigat-
ing building a 15mW waste-to-
energy plant in Office Road,
East Rockingham.
Both plants are designed to
reduce landfill.
